Chapter Four
JOSH approached Brendon’s front door. He could see the light through the second floor window where Brendon had his office. In fact, if he closed his eyes, he could picture Brendon sitting at his desk, typing at his computer, oblivious to the rest of the world. Josh had realized very early that if he wanted any type of relationship with the brilliant scientist, he had to accept there would be times when Brendon’s science would be the most important thing in his life. Not always, but Josh knew he had to be prepared to accept that sometimes he wouldn’t be the center of Brendon’s attention. As Josh knocked on the door and heard no response from inside the house, he began to realize how sometimes that situation would be hard to accept. He knocked again and still didn’t hear any response. He knew if he rang the doorbell, Brendon wasn’t likely to hear that either. Brendon had been working hard for the past three weeks to complete the draft of his paper, teach his classes, and put together plans for the display for the charity event that was coming up fast. Josh hadn’t been able to see him as much as he’d have liked, both because of Brendon’s schedule and his own. It was, after all, the height of football season.
He knocked again and then tried the door. It was locked, so he strode down the path between the houses to the back gate. It was open, so Josh went through and then closed the gate behind him. Instead of going directly to the house, he wandered back into the garden. Dry leaves crunched under his feet, and many of the plants that had been so glorious just a few weeks ago were now covered in brown and gold leaves. Fall had definitely arrived, and as a breeze blew through the yard, cutting through Josh’s jacket, he shook slightly, as did the leaves littering the ground. It seemed like the garden was shivering too, in anticipation of winter. Josh turned around, walked to the back door, and tested the doorknob to see if it was locked. The door opened and he stepped inside. “Brendon, sweetheart, are you home?” Josh called, but he didn’t hear any sort of answer. He closed the door and walked through to the front of the house. “Brendon, it’s me,” he called up the stairs, and he thought he heard an answer, so he began to climb. “Brendon?”
Muttering reached his ears and got louder as he got closer to the office. Josh heard Brendon typing, or something that sounded more like Brendon typing his keyboard into submission. Josh had heard Brendon type plenty of times, and the sound was often soothing and gentle. This was angry. “Hon, what did that keyboard ever do to you?”
“Stupid Nungesser, that asshole,” Brendon snapped and stopped typing. “I want to punch the slimy bastard.”
Brendon rarely swore, and certainly not like that. “What happened?” Josh asked as he stepped into Brendon’s office.
